A pile of kuikui nuts.

What is Kukui Nut Oil Anyway?

Kukui Nuts

You know that our quality, all natural ingredients are of the utmost importance to us, and we know they are also of the utmost importance to you!  That’s why I want to take some time over a series of blog posts to dive deeper into our ingredients, starting this week with kukui nut oil, one of those ingredients we get asked a lot about because it’s less common outside of Hawaii.

While thought to be native to Malaysia or Indonesia, the kukui nut tree is most known as the official state tree of Hawaii.  It arrived in Hawaii possibly as early as 300AD with early canoe-voyaging Polynesians.   You may have seen a Hawaiian lei, frequently made from the flowers, nuts, and leaves of the kukui nut tree.

Kukui nut oil, the oil from that same tree, can be a great addition to your skincare routine.  When used in the right amount (not a lot!), combined with our other powerful ingredients, kukui nut oil has lots of benefits.  Traditionally, Hawaiians practice bathing newborn babies in kukui nut oil for its ability to protect an infant’s delicate skin from sun, wind and ocean water.  Sounds like protection many of us could use now.

Benefits of Kukui Nut Oil for Skin

  • Absorbs quickly into the skin
  • Deeply hydrates skin
  • Prevents trans epidermal water loss
  • Soothes skin
  • Repairs and protects skin with antioxidants (vitamins A, C, and E)
  • Softens and smoothes skin

According to board-certified dermatologist Anna Karp, MD, kukui nut oil is an extremely hydrating ingredient that seals water into the skin. It is super lightweight, making it an excellent addition to face and body products.  That is exactly why we included just the right amount of this protective oil in Restoracell’s Skin Awakening Moisturizer. While the cornerstone of Restoracell is GHK-Cu (copper peptides), kuiku nut oil is just one of the amazing organic ingredients that makes Restoracell products work so well.
